Flying Free

Freeform poetry is some of my all-time favourite forms to follow when writing poetry. Here we have a freeform poem about freedom and responsibility, whose structure does not conform to traditional poetry. It is best read on a laptop or PC for the best effect, as on mobile the structure gets a little... crazy!

Let me fly free, my breath rapid from excitement.

Let the sweat be from fun, my skin warm not hot.

Let’s go on a trip and fly high and fast, be present.

Let’s be happy and think about what’s right, not what’s not.

I stand here shouting, why won’t you listen?

I want to fly free, why won’t you hear?

I should love myself, so why does my brow glisten?

I don’t get how you’re so close and near.

Do they ever feel the same?

Do they talk to themselves when they’re alone?

Do they ever play the blame game?

Do they care if someone like me moans?

Or sit waiting for the phone to ring?

Or perhaps they think like me, flying isn’t free?

Or maybe that’s just the silliest thing,

that we flying birds just need to be let be.
